Is a Solar Battery Worth It on the Mid Coast?
A few years ago, the standard advice was “solar yes, battery maybe later.” In 2026, that’s changed — and three things on the Mid Coast are driving it.
1. Feed-in tariffs have collapsed
Exporting surplus solar to the grid used to earn a decent credit. Today, feed-in rates are just a few cents per kWh, while you pay 30c+ to buy power back in the evening peak. A battery flips that equation: instead of selling cheap and buying dear, you store your daytime solar and use your own power at night.
For a household that’s out during the day and home at night, that gap is where most of the savings live.
2. Grid prices keep climbing
Every price rise makes self-consumption more valuable. A battery lets you sidestep a bigger and bigger chunk of your bill — and protects you from future increases. The more your usage shifts to evenings (think EV charging, air-con, cooking), the stronger the case.
3. Storm season and blackouts
This is the one Mid Coast locals feel most. Our region cops storms, and rural lines around Wingham, Gloucester and the Barrington can be slow to come back. A standard solar system shuts off in a blackout for safety — but a backup-capable battery keeps your essentials running automatically: fridge, lights, internet, Wi-Fi.
For many of our customers, riding out an outage without lifting a finger is worth as much as the bill savings.
So… is it worth it for you?
A battery makes the most sense if you:
- Use a lot of power in the evening, not just during the day
- Have (or are getting) an EV, air-con, or a pool
- Live somewhere blackouts are common or really inconvenient
- Want maximum independence from the grid and future price rises
It makes less sense if you’re home all day using most of your solar as it’s generated, and outages don’t bother you.
Start battery-ready even if you wait
Not ready to commit? We can install a hybrid (battery-ready) inverter now, so adding storage later is simple and cheaper. That keeps your options open without paying for the battery before you need it.
The honest truth is that batteries suit some homes brilliantly and others less so. That’s exactly the kind of straight advice we’ll give you — book a free assessment and we’ll model the numbers for your actual usage.
